The Enduring Legacy of Best Made Co.
Where Craftsmanship Meets Memory

Every Christmas, I find myself eyeing the same object in my mother's home – a pristine white canvas coal bag from Best Made Co., emblazoned with their signature red script “WONDERFUL.” I gifted it to her years ago, and now it's become an unexpected holiday tradition, filled with carefully wrapped presents instead of its originally intended coal or dirt. There's something wonderfully poetic about how this virtually indestructible tote, designed in 1920 for industrial use, has transformed into our family's vessel of joy (at least for me!) I'll admit, each holiday season, I'm tempted to "borrow" it back – though I suspect my mother knows exactly what I'm thinking!
Best Made Co.'s story is more than just a tale of a company – it's a testament to the power of human connection, the pursuit of quality, and the allure of the outdoors. From its humble beginnings in a backyard workshop to its current status as an independent, designer-led company, Best Made Co. has weathered storms, embraced change, and ultimately stayed true to its core values.
What makes Best Made Co.'s story so captivating? Let's break it down:
The Founder's Vision: Peter Buchanan-Smith, a graphic designer turned entrepreneur, had a dream: to create "the next great American outfitter-slash-lifestyle brand." This vision, fueled by a passion for craftsmanship and a desire to reconnect people with nature, laid the groundwork for Best Made Co.'s narrative. His personal journey, marked by a return to his roots and a repurchase of the company he founded, adds a layer of authenticity and heart to the brand.
The Iconic Axe: The story begins with a simple yet powerful symbol: a beautifully crafted axe with colorful, painted handles. This iconic product, the cornerstone of Best Made Co.'s identity, quickly earned the company the nickname "the fancy axe company." More than just a tool, the axe represents craftsmanship, quality, and a connection to a simpler, more hands-on way of life.
Storytelling as a Core Value: Best Made Co. understands the power of storytelling. They weave narratives into their marketing and product design, connecting with their audience on an emotional level. Their stories celebrate the value of well-made objects, the satisfaction of creating something unique, and the joy of experiencing the outdoors. For example, the Test-24 bandana, a limited-edition product, isn't just a piece of fabric—it's a tangible record of the company's design and manufacturing process, showcasing their commitment to exploration and craft.
American Manufacturing and Community: Best Made Co.'s dedication to American manufacturing resonates with customers who value local production and traditional crafts. They prioritize sourcing materials and manufacturing partnerships within the USA, believing that the act of making quality products uplifts communities.
Evolution and Resilience: Best Made Co.'s story is not without its challenges. The company has experienced ownership changes and navigated a constantly evolving market. However, their ability to adapt, learn, and return to their core values has only strengthened their brand. This resilience adds depth and intrigue to their story, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to quality and their dedication to their customers.
Best Made Co.'s story is a powerful example of how a brand can build a loyal following by staying true to its values and connecting with its audience on a deeper level. By embracing their history, celebrating their craft, and inviting customers into their world, Best Made Co. has created a brand that is more than just a company – it's a community of like-minded individuals who appreciate quality, adventure, and the enduring power of a well-told story.
