Does it count that I believe Thom Browne could be the greatest American Tailor in the business right now when his tailoring is Italian? I feel guilty for thinking so - maybe I know too much!

Here's my truth.

On a recent job application I was asked to list my favorite American brands - Thom Browne was top of mind for tailoring, but I did not list him. And that's what's eating at me. The Ermenegildo Zegna Group owns 90% of his brand now. Ralph Lauren has most of his tailoring worked by the master craftsman in Italy too, but no doubt he's American. So why can't I allow TB to be a great American tailor?

Now, its not impossible to like everything, but I do understand and know it's very good tailoring. The message is not only meant for the purest of tailoring experts, but it's in the combo punch of his looks - both fashionable and runway worthy, but the CONSTRUCTION is second to none. He clearly has the skill, the eye and the appreciation for "traditional tailoring" but adds it into a conceptual collection. Others follow and try, but he stays ahead.

I'm not saying he is number one... because he is not always my cup of tea... but he really is one of the finest. I guess he really is a great American Tailor for what it's worth - it's only my opinion of course, but based in understanding.
